Man randomly punches woman, 71, in Times Square subway station: NYPD

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man randomly punched a 71-year-old woman in the face inside a Times Square subway station on Tuesday, the NYPD said.

The woman was inside the Times Square-42nd Street station around noon on Tuesday when a man who appeared to be in his 40s walked up and punched her in the side of the face, police said.

The man boarded a train after the unprovoked attack, the NYPD said. The woman was treated for injuries at the scene.

The attack happened on the A/C/E/ subway platform, ABC7 reported.

The man hadn't been arrested as of Tuesday afternoon. An investigation is ongoing.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea on Tuesday said the department would increase its presence in subways amid a spate of recent attacks, including a stabbing spree that left two people dead and two people wounded last week.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, meanwhile, called Tuesday's attack "unacceptable."

"We will NOT tolerate violence on our subways," he wrote on Twitter.

"I rode the subway yesterday and added over 500 officers to the beat," he added. "We will make sure public transportation is safe for all New Yorkers."
