Judge rules no bail for homeless man in Lower Manhattan slashing of Orthodox Jewish couple, child
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Manhattan judge on Friday ordered a 30-year-old homeless man be held without bail on attempted murder charges after he allegedly slashed an Orthodox Jewish couple and their 1-year-old child in Lower Manhattan earlier this week.
The attack occurred just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday on State Street near Battery Park and was being investigated by NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force as a possible hate crime.
A video captured the moment Darryl Jones allegedly crept up from behind and attacked the family who was pushing a stroller.
The 22-year-old man was slashed in the head, the 23-year-old woman on the lip, and their 1-year-old child was slashed on the chin, according to police.
The victims were visiting New York from Belgium and were treated for minor injuries by first responders at the scene.
Jones was allegedly ranting during the attack and was cuffed by officials at the scene.
Authorities also recovered a knife during his arrest.
His charges include attempted murder, three counts of assault, assault on a person less than seven years old, three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
According to police, Jones has been arrested at least seven other times and was released in February after serving nine years in state prison for an August 2011 robbery and attack in Harlem.
Officials said Jones struck a 50-year-old man with an unknown object in a stairwell, then punched, kicked before throwing the victim down several flights of stairs.
Jones is on parole until 2026.
