NY reps, de Blasio call for impeachment: 'Donald Trump must go' after Capitol siege

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Seven members of New York City's Democratic Congressional delegation called for the resignation or impeachment of President Donald Trump on Saturday after the deadly siege of the Capitol this week.

The lawmakers joined Mayor Bill de Blasio to demand that if Trump doesn't resign then his cabinet must use the 25th Amendment to remove the president. If the cabinet doesn't do that, then the delegation want's impeachment proceedings to begin Monday.

"When I think of my friends, these good people I've served with for years, they were in danger and democracy was in danger," de Blasio said at a press conference on the steps of City Hall. "It's very clear what the result must be. Donald Trump must go now."

"Anyone who is that treasonous, anyone who has lost control of his mental abilities to that level as to start an insurrection against the United States should not have his finger on the nuclear button," the mayor added.

The seven Congress members included Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, Rep. Nydia Velázquez, Rep. Gregory Meeks, Rep. Adriano Espaillat, Rep. Jamaal Bowman and Rep. Tom Suozzi.

Suozzi said impeaching the president won't simply be a symbolic gesture.

"If the president is impeached, I believe he loses his power under the Constitution to pardon people for the impeachable offense. He can no longer pardon people for anything relation to this insurrection if he becomes impeached," Suozzi said.

Maloney said the FBI has agreed to an emergency meeting Monday afternoon to account for what they did to prepare for Wednesday's events.

"These threats were all over the internet. Everyone knew about it. What was their role in protecting us? What was their role that day to defend the Capitol and defend the people? And what are they doing now to hold people accountable?" Maloney said.
