NYC sues Chipotle, alleging 'complete disregard' for Fair Workweek Law

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City has hit Chipotle Mexican Grill with a lawsuit claiming the chain changed employees’ schedules with little notice and no extra pay, among other violations, according to a report.

The city brought the lawsuit against Chipotle on Wednesday on behalf of employees at “several dozen stores,” the New York Times reported.

The suit claims Chipotle not only altered workers’ schedules “without sufficient notice or extra pay,” but also forced workers to work “consecutive shifts without sufficient time off or extra pay,” in violation of the city’s Fair Workweek Law, the outlet reported

It also claims Chipotle hired new workers without offering existing employees the opportunity to cover additional shifts, according to the outlet.

“The pervasiveness of Chipotle’s complete disregard for the city’s Fair Workweek Law extends to every aspect of the law in every corner of our city,” Lorelai Salas, who heads the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection at the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings, said in a statement.

In a statement provided to the Times, Chipotle’s chief corporate affairs officer, Laurie Schalow, called the lawsuit a “dramatic overreach.”

“Chipotle remains committed to its employees and their right to a fair, just and humane work environment that provides opportunities for all,” Chalow said.
