NYC to add bike boulevards, over 30 miles of new bike lanes by end of year

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday announced that bike boulevards across the boroughs would be added in addition to building over 30 more miles of protected bike lanes by the end of 2021.

The city is committing to over 30 miles of new bike lanes by end of the year, de Blasio announced.

The announcement for the "more effective bike network" came during the city's StreetsWeek as a way of "continuing the city's road to recovery," according to the mayor.

Additionally, the city will build five new bike boulevards across each borough in New York City.

The bike lanes will be located at 21st Street in South Slope, Brooklyn, at University Place in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, at 39th Street in Sunnyside, Queens, Jackson Avenue in Mott Haven, Bronx and on Netherland Avenue in Staten Island.

There will also be 28 miles of new and improved busways and bus lanes in 2021 that will serve 951,000 riders daily, according to de Blasio.

In Queens, the new busway will be located at Archer Avenue, with complete busways on Jamaica Avenue on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan with new bus lanes at Battery Place, Avenue A and Avenue D.

New busways will be located at University Avenue, Story Avenue and Gun Hill Road in the Bronx with improvements that will serve 175K daily riders.

Mayor Bill de Blasio today celebrated Bike-to-Work Month by commuting completing a 6-mile morning commute from Gracie Mansion to City Hall by bicycle.
