NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City will mark the anniversary of its first confirmed COVID-19 death with a memorial this coming weekend.
The city will hold a “COVID-19 Day of Remembrance” at 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office said in a release.
The memorial will stream online at nyc.gov/COVIDMemorial, the release said.
New Yorkers who lost family members or friends to COVID-19 can submit their names and photos online. Some of the photos will be included in the ceremony, according to the release.
At a news briefing Monday morning, de Blasio said the memorial would allow New Yorkers to “remember the people who meant so much to us.”
“We constantly talk about moving forward and our recovery, but we’ve got to take time to remember the people we’ve lost, and everything they gave to us, and everything we owe to their families as we come back together,” he said.
“This year has taught us the power of New Yorkers standing together, and the compassion of New Yorkers for each other,” he added. “We’re going to need that going forward.”
