NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Shocking video shows illegal fireworks creating large explosions at an upper Manhattan intersection last week amid an ongoing fireworks crackdown by the city ahead of the Fourth of July.
The NYPD said it was searching for those involved as it released video to WABC showing the explosions at the intersection of 204th Street and Sherman Avenue in Inwood last Friday.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Jimmy Essig told WABC that they were not your typical fireworks.
“One caller described it as a bomb going off. And if you look at the video, it’s quite disturbing,” Essig said. “This is unacceptable in New York City.”
In the video, fiery explosions can be seen at the intersection, including one that goes off feet away from a passing bicyclist.
Another video appears to show an explosive being made, with people using flour to enhance it, according to the report.
It comes after Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a crackdown on illegal fireworks in the city. So far, a task force has confiscated thousands of dollars in illegal pyrotechnics and made about 30 arrests.
