WATCH: Funeral service held for DMX at NYC church

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A funeral service for DMX was held Sunday, a day after thousands of fans turned out at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where a memorial was held for the late rapper.

Sunday’s private funeral service and homegoing celebration at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn was broadcast on BET.

Family members, friends and clergy members dressed in white and red honored the life and faith of the hip-hop icon.

Religious leaders and musicians prayed, sang and delivered moving tributes as members of the rapper's family sat in the first rows of the church.

On Saturday, a monster truck with the words “LONG LIVE DMX" emblazoned on it carried DMX's shiny red casket for more than 15 miles from Yonkers — where the rapper grew up — to the Barclays Center. Hundreds of motorcyclists trailed the truck during the procession.

Kanye West, Nas and Busta Rhymes were among the big names who attended the two-hour memorial ceremony at the Barclays Center, which was limited to close friends and family because of the pandemic.

Outside the arena, thousands of fans gathered to remember the rapper and play his music.

DMX, whose birth name is Earl Simmons, died April 9 after suffering a “catastrophic cardiac arrest.” He spent several days on life support after being rushed to White Plains Hospital from his home April 2.
