VIDEO: NJ officer saves choking girl with Heimlich maneuver during lunch break

MANCHESTER, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A New Jersey officer on his lunch break at a pizzeria saved the life of a young girl that began choking on her food, according to his department on Monday.

The video footage shows Det. Richard Jupinka walk towards a group of diners at a nearby table, when he realized the child was choking, and unable to breathe as her uncle unsuccessfully attempted the Heimlich Maneuver, the department said.

Jupinka took over care of the child and was able to quickly clear the food obstruction from the child's airway through the use of the Heimlich Maneuver.

The girl began breathing normally once the obstruction was cleared and did not need any further medical attention, the department added.

"Thankfully, one of our officers was in the right place at the right time," Manchester Police Chief Robert Dolan said in a prepared statement.

"Had he not been there, this incident could have ended much differently."
