Scammer posing as NJ mayor sending emails requesting gift cards

GLOUCESTER, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- An email scammer pretending to be a New Jersey mayor is targeting residents with messages seeking gift cards, according to a report.

A handful of Camden County have received emails marked "From David R. Mayor" with the subject line "Gift Card Needed ASAP!" NJ.com reported Thursday.

David R. Mayer is the mayor of Gloucester Township, but the emails didn't come from his office, the outlet reported.

"Official government agencies do not ask for gift cards," Gloucester Township police said, according to the outlet. "Please do not fall for these email or phone scams, and simply delete the email or hang up on the caller."
