300K LI homeowners would get $375 each under proposed COVID relief plan
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Hundreds of thousands of Nassau County homeowners could receive $375 in cash if an assistance plan proposed by the county executive is approved.
The $1.9 million COVID-19 relief bill President Joe Biden signed in March provided Nassau County with approximately $385 million in pandemic relief, County Executive Laura Curran said at a news briefing Monday.
Curran hopes to put $100 million of that funding toward "direct cash payments" for middle-class house, condo and apartment owners, she said at the briefing.
Approximately 300,000 Nassau County homeowners would receive around $375 each if the County Legislature supports the initiative, known as the "Homeowner Assistance Plan."
"I believe that Nassau County's high vaccination rate, and the fact that so many of our residents are willing to get the shot, is helping to power our recovery," she said. "However in order for us to have a strong economic recovery we must continue to address the economic impact of the virus."
"This is to benefit the middle class, and it is my hope that people who receive this check spend that money in Nassau," she added.
Homeowners who are STAR and Enhanced STAR-eligible would qualify for the payments, Curran noted.
"I look forward to working with the legislature and my economic advisory council to move this forward for our residents," she said. "I don't think there is any question that this is the right thing to do."
