Jones Beach temporarily suspends swimming after shark sighting

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A shark was spotted at Jones Beach on Tuesday, prompting New York state’s parks department to temporarily suspend swimming.

Swimming was suspended Tuesday afternoon as authorities used drones to inspect Jones Beach’s shoreline, New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation said in a press release.

Swimmers will only be allowed back into the water “at least an hour after the last sighting,” the department said.

“Long Island beaches are a crucial resource for New Yorkers in summer, and we must make sure people feel safe when visiting,” State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said in a statement.

“With assistance from New York State Police, we are expanding our measures to patrol for sharks and other potentially dangerous marine animals,” he added.

Tuesday’s shark sighting came a day after a lifeguard claimed a shark bit him near Jones Beach’s Central Mall.

The beach reopened for swimming around 2 p.m. on Monday.
