More than 3M NYers, or 15%, now vaccinated against COVID-19: Cuomo

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- More than 3 million New Yorkers, representing more than 15 percent of the state's population, have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday.

Cuomo made the announcement hours after announcing that the state had launched a COVID-19 "passport" that New Yorkers who have been vaccinated or have tested negative for the virus will be able to use to enter select venues and events.

"We continue to expand eligibility and establish more mass and pop-up vaccination sites as we race against the clock to beat New York's COVID positivity rate," the governor said in a statement.

"We're working 24/7 to get shots in arms and more New Yorkers are being vaccinated for COVID-19 every single day," he added.

New York state reported 49 new COVID-19-related fatalities on Friday, bringing its death toll to 40,190, Cuomo said.

Of the 282,449 COVID-19 test results that came back in the state on Thursday, 8,507, or 3.01 percent, were positive, he said.

As of Thursday, 4,603 New Yorkers were hospitalized with COVID-19, 913 of whom were in intensive care and 558 of whom were on ventilators.
