NY state shortens quarantine time to 10 days to align with CDC guidance: Cuomo

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New Yorkers who are exposed to COVID-19 will only be required to quarantine for 10 days, provided they don't experience any symptoms during that time, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.

The state updated its COVID-19 quarantine guidelines on Tuesday to align with the Centers for Disease Control's latest guidance, Cuomo said in a release.

Any resident who completes a 10-day quarantine should continue to monitor for symptoms for an additional four days and "immediately self-isolate and contact the local health department or their healthcare provider" if they do start to feel sick, he said.

All New Yorkers should continue to wear masks, socially distance and avoid gatherings, the governor noted.

"As we approach the New Year and the end of the holiday season, all New Yorkers must remember one simple truth: celebrating smart stops shutdowns," he said in a statement.

"While the holidays have always been synonymous with socialization, the data shows the vast majority of new cases are stemming from private gatherings," he added.

New York state on Tuesday reported 124 new COVID-19-related deaths, Cuomo said.

One of the 124 New Yorkers who died lived in the Bronx; 12 lived in Brooklyn; eight lived in Manhattan; eight lived in Nassau County; two lived in Orange County; nine lived in Queens; five lived on Staten Island; 11 lived in Suffolk County; and four lived in Westchester County.

Of the 160,164 COVID-19 test results that came back in the state on Monday, 11,438, or 7.14 percent, were positive, he said.

As of Monday night, hospitals across New York were treating 7,814 COVID-19 patients, up by 255 from Sunday night.

One thousand two hundred and twenty-four of the 7,814 patients were in intensive care, and 711 were on ventilators, the governor said.
