NY stadiums, arenas can reopen Feb. 23 with safety measures, Barclays Center opening already approved: Cuomo

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Large stadiums and arenas in New York state will be allowed to reopen later this month with reduced capacity and other safety measures in place, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday.

The governor said any large stadium or arena—including those hosting hockey, basketball, football, soccer and baseball, as well as musical and other performances—will be able to open on Feb. 23.

The arenas and stadiums will have to submit their reopening plans to the state Health Department for approval.

Venues with a capacity over 10,000 people will be limited to 10% capacity.

Visitors will be required to submit a negative coronavirus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test within 72 hours of the event for entry.

Face coverings, social distancing and temperature checks will also be required.

Mandatory assigned seating will also be in place for social distancing purposes.

Barclays Center has already been approved using the reopening model, Cuomo said. It will reopen on Feb. 23, when the Brooklyn Nets will face the Sacramento Kings.

"This hits the balance of safe reopening," Cuomo said at a briefing. "And a PCR test is as safe as you can get."
