Russians urged to nix alcohol for 2 months after getting the COVID-19 vaccine

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Top Russian officials are warning the country's residents not to drink alcohol for two months after they get vaccinated for COVID-19, according to a report.

In an interview, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova said the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine will take 42 days to take effect, TASS News Agency reported.

During that time, citizens should "refrain from visiting crowded places, wear face masks, use sanitizers, minimize contacts and refrain from drinking alcohol or taking immunosuppressant drugs," she said, according to the outlet.

The head of Russia's consumer safety watchdog, Anna Popova, also urged residents to avoid alcohol after receiving the vaccine.

"It's a strain on the body," she reportedly said. "If we want to stay healthy and have a strong immune response, don't drink alcohol."

Russia started rolling out vaccines this past weekend.
