Drew Lock told reporters on Wednesday that he will continue to support Tommy DeVito, but didn’t hide the fact that he was frustrated with the decision by the Giants to skip over Lock and start DeVito in replacement of Daniel Jones.
Boomer Esiason, who has his own experience similar to Lock’s, is completely understanding of the quarterback’s frustration.
“If I were Drew Lock, I would be pissed off too,” Boomer said. “‘What did I come here for? Now all of a sudden you’re passing me over?’”
Boomer asked out of his contract with the Cardinals after their head coach skipped over him in favor of Kent Graham as the starting quarterback when Boomer was in line to earn incentives in his contract. Lock can earn up to $3 million thanks to incentives in his deal, but that likely won’t happen thanks to the decision to start DeVito. Boomer believes there was likely an understanding that Lock would be the backup to Jones, which likely played a role in Lock deciding to sign in New York, but now, things have changed.
“I think the Giants are actually doing the right thing for their fans,” Boomer said. “There’s a pecking order. There’s an understanding when you sign your contracts, but once the team starts losing, all of those agreements go completely out the window. All the belief your team had in you means nothing when the team starts going south.
“I appreciate it 100 percent. I get his take on things. He’s not gonna be here next year. They’re basically screwing him over.”
