BT & Sal sound off on Woody Johnson's reported meddling: 'Cut the checks. That's it'
Zack Rosenblatt and Dianna Russini of The Athletic shined a blinding light on the meddling of Woody Johnson during the final months of Joe Douglas’ tenure, reporting on ownership pushing for acquisitions like Mike Williams and Tyron Smith while shutting down moves like extending Bryce Huff or trading for Jerry Jeudy.
Reacting to that report, BT and Sal agree that Johnson stepping in and playing such a prominent part in organizational decisions means bad news for a franchise that seems further away from winning than ever.
“Woody, cut the checks. That’s it,” BT said. “I don’t want to hear anything about football from Woody Johnson. I don’t. They’re an absolute mess and everyone is getting tired of hearing it...it just seems like a mess out there as always.
“Now you think you know football? You know nothing about football. Now he thinks he does, and that is the most bothersome, worrisome thing I think I’ve heard about the Jets this century.”
Based on the report, Douglas didn’t seem to have much control, if any, on the roster moves in the final months of his tenure, which is an all-too familiar feeling for New York sports fans, whether it be James Dolan for the Knicks before the Leon Rose era or the Wilpon era with the Mets before Steve Cohen bought the team.
“This is a problem. It’s not just Woody Johnson,” Sal said. “Owners in sports that get involved in the sports decisions are a major problem...that’s how things go wrong.
“To have the ultimate success as an owner, you have to hire football people and let them do their job. Who reading this would want to come in here and work for Woody Johnson?”
