The Orioles’ biggest offseason splash drew a strong endorsement from someone who knows Pete Alonso as well as anyone: former Mets manager Buck Showalter.
Joining Inside Access, Showalter said he spoke with Alonso about an hour before the interview and described him as “so excited” about coming to Baltimore, already looking for places to live with his family. Showalter praised Alonso as a player who goes every day, stays consistent, and brings both production and presence, saying Baltimore will get him, and he’ll get Baltimore.
Showalter went deeper on what the Orioles are adding, pointing to Alonso’s durability, mentality, and leadership traits. He noted that Alonso takes pride in being available, calling it a "sixth tool" in today’s game. He also highlighted Alonso’s ability to bring stability to a young clubhouse, saying the first baseman is the same person every day, offers honest opinions when asked, and leads through both example and preparation. Showalter added that Alonso’s offensive profile should translate easily, describing him as a hitter who “collides with balls” and drives them to places “you can’t catch them.”
Beyond Alonso, Showalter touched on the Orioles’ aggressive offseason and the broader landscape of Major League Baseball. He acknowledged the team’s need for more pitching despite major additions such as Taylor Ward and Ryan Helsley, and suggested the organization has taken a significant step forward with Alonso’s arrival. He also warned that another Dodgers title could spark serious discussions about MLB’s financial structure, comparing the situation to NIL in college sports. Still, he expressed excitement for both Alonso and Baltimore, saying the fit works on multiple levels.
