Evan Roberts declared last week that the best course of action for the Giants moving forward was to fire Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll at the end of the season, which ended with a 3-14 record.
John Mara announced Monday morning that Schoen and Daboll would both be back, and after hearing the owner’s comments on the decision and the Giants as a whole, Evan is even more concerned about the head coach and general manager keeping their jobs, especially with Mara adding that he is running out of patience, and better see the team in a better spot at this time next year.
“Is that conducive with a roster that’s far away from winning? Is that conducive with a team coming off a three-win year?” Evan said.
“They’re gonna act in the offseason as if they gotta do everything to keep their job. I hate that.
“If I’m a Giant fan, who is gonna be a Giant fan long after these guys are gone, I hate that. They’re not gonna make moves that are in the best interest of the long-term health of the franchise. They’re gonna make moves that are in the best interest of themselves, and keeping their jobs.”
Evan worries that Schoen will behave like a “desperate” GM looking to keep his job by making short-term fixes that will ultimately not be enough for real success, and will only end up hurting the team in the long run.
The mixture of an impatient owner with a team that needs a lot of improvements could end up in a Dave Gettleman repeat, where whoever replaces Schoen will be faced with addressing several contract and salary cap issues that Schoen had to navigate when he took the job.
“Coming off a three-win season in which they’re not close…you have the owner basically saying ‘You better win next year,’” Evan said. “Do you really want your general manger, who is clearly on the hot seat…you’re gonna make short-term decisions, and I just don’t mean the quarterback. I mean salary cap related, who you bring in, and rushing a young quarterback.”
