Evan: Would be 'terrible message' to team if Mets don't add relievers after Brandon Nimmo comments

After the Mets loss on Monday, Brandon Nimmo seemed to send a not-so-subtle message to David Stearns and the front office when it comes to what the team needs before the trade deadline in three weeks.

New York’s bullpen immediately fell apart on Monday and turned a 2-2 tie into an 8-2 loss to the Pirates, and shortly after, Will Sammon of The Athletic reported that Nimmo has been lobbying the front office to add before the deadline at the end of the month.

“I don’t think that we are that far off from being a real contender,” Nimmo said, via Sammon.

Evan says that message from Nimmo highlights the Mets’ need to go out and get some relief help, and Stearns and company need to respond.

“When you have a player openly saying ‘Hey, go get us some help,’ you put yourself in a spot where you better get some help,” Evan said. “I think that is a clear line to the front office. ‘Go get us some help.’”

The Mets bullpen has been an issue all season, including Edwin Diaz, who is pitching to a 4.26 ERA on the year. The relief market will likely be competitive, as several teams have bullpen needs, but Evan says it is the Mets’ most obvious necessity, and with players publicly stating that additions should be made, the pressure is on the front office to deliver.

“There are some games you can go back and forth on…[Monday], sure they only scored two runs, but the bullpen came in and set the team on fire,” Evan said. “It worries me because I’ve seen it before. It’s one thing for me on the radio to say ‘Okay David Stearns, go get this.’

“But how do you tell a locker room, who clearly got their message out yesterday…how do you tell them ‘Maybe, maybe not’? what a terrible message that would be sending if they don’t get bullpen help now.”
