The Yankees didn’t get much from Frankie Montas yet again on Thursday night, while Jordan Montgomery has still given up just one run in three starts for the Cardinals after being dealt just before the deadline.
The Yankees rotation has been solid overall of late, save for Montas, which has Gio wondering why Montgomery was sent away in the first place.
“He wanted a defensive center field option badly,” Gio said of Brian Cashman. “My take on it was he was trying to get Pablo Lopez as well as Montas, and he didn’t get that done. He wanted to sort of swap Lopez for Montgomery, bring in Bader, and at that point Montgomery would have been expendable. But that didn’t happen and he wound up behind the eight ball.
“There had to be another way to get Harrison Bader other than to trade Jordan Montgomery. I have no idea why it wasn’t a prospect and had to be Montgomery. Especially when you’re talking about a lefty who gives you innings and would have really, really helped.”
