Mets

Gio explains sports fandom 'epiphany' that these Mets provided

The Mets' magical season has come to an end, falling in game six to the Dodgers in the NLCS, a landmark that nearly nobody expected New York to reach earlier in the season, or even at the start of the playoffs.

With the loss, the Mets' title drought reaches 38 years, but Gio said the "epiphany" he had from watching this Mets team was that the seasons shouldn't be judged on the final outcomes, but how the team made fans feel along the way.

"It was special. It was different. It was something that I don't think Mets fans are ever gonna forget," Gio said.

"I've seen everything but a championship…and I decided that it's okay to judge seasons positively or negatively with other things…yeah, it didn't end in a championship, but this team was different."

The Mets looked dead in the water back in May, when they were 11 games under .500 during a season that already had low expectations. But they became one of the best teams in baseball from June on, and provided fans with several unforgettable moments in the playoffs, from Pete Alonso's game-winning home run in the Wild Card Series to Francisco Lindor's grand slam in the clinching game of the NLDS. In that regard, there will be moments to look back on forever, and that feels like a success, even if the end result was not a championship.

"As you get older and experience a lot of these losses, you think to yourself, 'What are you watching sports for?'" Gio said. "For years, all I had were the memories of bad losses…but there's one team that wins at the end. If I can't take something out of a special year like that, then what are we doing?

"The Mets did something that nobody expected…it was a great season and an exciting season."
