Jets claim DT Phidarian Mathis off waivers from Commanders

Phidarian Mathis has a new home – New York.

The New York Jets claimed Mathis off waivers from the Commanders on Monday, absorbing the remainder of his contract through next season.

Mathis, 26, was the Commanders’ second-round pick in 2022, but he was waived on Saturday when Washington activated DT Jonathan Allen off injured reserve. He appeared in 12 games this year, making 17 tackles (two for loss), and he had 25 tackles, one pass defensed, and one fumble recovery in 23 total games over three seasons.

Washington moved on after the DT never really found footing in new head coach Dan Quinn and DC Joe Whitt Jr.'s system – he is the 23rd of 33 Ron Rivera-era picks to already be gone from DC – but at least for next week, he can bolster a Jets defensive line that saw Quinnen Williams limited last week by a hamstring injury and EDGE rusher Braiden McGregor inactive Sunday with an ankle issue.
