Giants ownership reinforced its faith in Joe Schoen Monday morning, making it clear that the general manager will be staying in his current position thanks to the “young talent” that John Mara and company are excited about despite another dreadful season in the wins and losses department.
Hours later, Schoen took the podium and thanked Giants ownership for sparing him despite the lack of wins over the past three seasons.
“I’m honored and humbled that John Mara and Steve Tisch will allow me to see this process through,” Schoen said. “To our fans, I understand that the wins haven't been to what the expectation is. I'm fortunate enough to be tasked with getting the organization and the franchise back where it belongs. That’s the goal as we move forward.”
Schoen’s Giants finished a miserable 4-13 on the season, winning the final two games of the year to fall from the No. 1 to the No. 5 pick in the draft. Overall, Big Blue is just 22-45 in Schoen’s tenure, leading many fans to call for his job. But ownership reinforced its support of Schoen after head coach Brian Daboll was fired midseason, and that did not change over the second half of the season. As far as that what means for Schoen in terms of a potential extension, he declined to go into details.
“I’m not gonna get into my personal contract situation,” Schoen said. “As you’ve seen today, unfortunately, the nature of the business, I’m not sure it really matters how many years you have on a contract or not. But I’m not gonna get into my personal situation.”
With Schoen staying, he will be tasked with finding the next head coach for Big Blue, and he says finding worthy candidates shouldn’t be an issue.
“From the people I’ve talked to, the consensus, there are a lot of potential head coaching candidates that are excited about the opportunity here because of Jaxson Dart,” Schoen said.
“Early on, I made mistakes. I'm fortunate to have great ownership here where you're allowed to stub your toe and try to course correct. Over the last couple years, we’ve been able to add a franchise quarterback and a No. 1 receivers in Malik Nabers…there’s pieces in place that also make this an attractive job.”
