John Sterling: Yankees have chance to be 'great team' with right offseason moves

John Sterling talked all things Yankees and Juan Soto with Keith McPherson on Wednesday night, and after the two discussed Soto’s departure, they began to break down what’s next for the Bombers.

In no way does Sterling believe that Soto leaving means the Yankees can’t get back to the Fall Classic in 2025.

“He’s gone,” Sterling said. “That doesn’t mean the Yankees have to say ‘Woe is me, now we’re gonna lose.’”

For starters, in addition to already signing Max Fried, Sterling would like to see the Yanks swing a trade with the Cubs for Cody Bellinger, which has reportedly been discussed.

“If they can get Cody Bellinger to play center field, move Judge back to right and have a platoon in left field, they have a chance to have a heck of a team,” Sterling said.

“Bellinger is a left handed hitter who can play center field and first base. They could have a heck of a team.”

As for reports of the Yankees working with the hated Astros to try and swing a trade for Kyle Tucker, or to sign free agent Alex Bregman, Sterling is all for it.

“Love it. I don’t care about the history,” Sterling said. “That’s all over with.”

Regardless of what moves are out there, the Yankees have months before spring training, which is plenty of time for Brian Cashman and his staff to make more moves and try their best to address the gaping hole left behind by Soto.

“They don’t go to camp until the beginning of March,” Sterling said. “They have a few months.”
