Keith expects Yankees to address third base with 'Marwin Gonzalez type' journeyman

The Yankees still need to figure out their final infield opening, specifically third base, as Jazz Chisholm can now move back to his natural second base with Gleyber Torres signing with the Tigers.

There have been several candidates rumored to be potential fits at the hot corner for the Bombers, but Keith McPherson isn’t buying the Yanks going out and getting any of them, nor does he think it would be the best idea to do so.

“They’ve been out on Luis Arraez, it was never a thing, and I understand why,” Keith said. “The philosophy change that the Yankees have had after Juan Soto, he doesn’t fit.

“Alex Bregman can still be had by anybody in Major League Baseball, he’s a World Series champion…how come nobody else has signed him? The Yankees haven’t signed him, and I don’t want them to sign him. Not at his age.”

Bregman will likely command a long-term deal, while Arraez, despite his three straight batting titles, has no power and even less defense in the infield, while his baserunning leaves a lot to be desired.

As for a cheaper veteran option, Keith doesn’t buy the Yanks taking another former Cardinals star that is past their prime, and instead sees the Bombers going a familiar route by trying to capture lightning in a bottle with a role player that costs next to nothing, and letting them compete with their internal options.

“Nolan Arenado, I don’t think he gets it done,” Keith said. “The Yankees are probably going to bring in a Marwin Gonzalez type, some journeyman on a minor league deal to try and prove himself.”
