Keith says Mets fans have to be excited about current regime after Pete Alonso deal: 'They won'
News broke of the Pete Alonso signing just hours before Keith McPherson took the air, and once he began his show, he gave kudos to the Mets regime for waiting it out and getting their homegrown slugger back on a friendly deal that still sets the team up to swing big in the near future.
"Mets fans, you gotta be excited about who is in control. Steve Cohen and David Stearns, those two together as a tandem, they're a powerful tag team," Keith said. "The richest and the smartest people in the room. They won.
"Somebody needed to give a little bit. Pete Alonso and Scott Boras gave a lotta bit."
Alonso was seeking a three-year deal after his market seemingly collapsed, and he wound up signing a two-year, $54 million deal, one that reportedly includes an opt-out after this season. The structure of the contract allows Alonso to go back to the open market should he have a big year in 2025, and it also allows the Mets to be in the running for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., should he not sign an extension with the Blue Jays.
"This is a win for the Mets," Keith said. "It's not the long-term deal he was seeking...ultimately, he might not even make the $54 million. I think the writing is on the wall here. This guy is 27 home runs away from being the all-time Mets leader in home runs. He can get that done this year...he can test the market again, and I think it lines up here for Pete to go to the Blue Jays and Vladdy to still be a Met.
"You can probably get both. Maybe not this year, but in the near future."
