Knicks reportedly will interview fourth head coaching candidate in Pelicans assistant James Borrego

The Knicks will reportedly interview a fourth candidate for their head coaching vacancy after being granted permission by the Pelicans, according to James Edwards III of The Athletic.

Per Edwards, New York requested permission from New Orleans to interview assistant coach James Borrego, and the Pelicans have granted that request. Borrego joins former head coaches Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown in addition to Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori as candidates to interview for the job.

Borrego was the head coach of the Hornets from 2018 to 2022, finishing over .500 for the first time in what was his final season as head coach. He returned to an NBA bench last season with the Pelicans, who finished with a dreadful 21-61 record.

The 47-year-old spend three seasons alongside Gregg Popovich with the Spurs during their dynastic days, and he spent 30 games as the Magic head coach in an interim role, going 10-20 in that time.

As noted by Edwards, Borrego is represented by CAA, the agency that Leon Rose used to lead and has used his connections there to sign several players represented by the company.
