Sabrina Ionescu drained an improbable game winner from just steps beyond halfcourt to put the Liberty on the brink of their first-ever championship.
The instant classic that was game two of the WNBA Finals was capped off by the heroics of Ionescu, who dribbled in place just beyond the halfcourt line, made a quick move to her left and pulled up for a deep triple that rimmed in with one second left on the clock, giving New York a three-point lead to break the tie and complete one of the largest comebacks in WNBA Finals history, as the Liberty had trailed the Lynx by 15 earlier in the game.
The shot from Ionescu also marked one of the greatest shots in Finals history for a New York basketball team, and drew plenty of praise from basketball legends and other sports stars from around the world. CC Sabathia, Kevin Durant, and Luka Doncic were just some of the notable names to express their disbelief in Ionescu’s clutch bucket from 28 feet out.
Ionescu wasn’t having her best shooting night before the final minute of play, but she knocked down a big trey to put New York up four with a minute to go, then hit the game winner that will go down as one of the best the WNBA has ever seen.
“I’m built for this moment,” Ionescu said after the game.
A win in game four on Friday would seal the deal for the Liberty in a finals series that has instantly become a classic. Tip-off is 8:00 p.m. in Minnesota.
