McMonigle details disastrous worst-case scenario if Giants get Matthew Stafford

Chris McMonigle has maintained that bringing in Matthew Stafford would be a big mistake by the Giants, as he would much prefer to see New York bring in Aaron Rodgers on the cheap to be a stopgap and mentor for whichever rookie Big Blue chooses to take with the third overall pick.

Some fans believe the Rodgers route would result in disaster, much like it did for the Jets. But C-Mac says the worst-case scenario with Rodgers is far, far better and more enticing to an incoming regime than if the Stafford experiment flops.

“What’s worse: what if you trade for Matthew Stafford, give up a bunch of picks - probably as much if not more than it would take to move up from No. 3 - you trade for a 37-year-old quarterback and pay him $50 million, and you probably take the cap hit later on so you can spend elsewhere this year…what happens if he comes in, is complacent because he made his money, or gets injured?” C-Mac said.

“Think about the scenario where it doesn’t work with Stafford…what do you think a new regime would rather come into?”

C-Mac believes if things go wrong this season, Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen are likely gone. So, wouldn’t the job be much more appealing if Rodgers is gone after one year, a top-three pick is in the building, and not a 37-year-old being paid $50 million?

“Would you rather come in with a young quarterback not making any money, or a quarterback making $50 million where the cap hits are getting worse for you?” C-Mac said.

“Who the hell is gonna want to take that job?”
