Another former Yankee reliever is taking the 7 train to Queens.
According to multiple reports, the Mets have signed Luke Weaver to a two-year, $22 million deal, joining Devin Williams as 2025 Yankee bullpen arms to head across town. Last offseason, Clay Holmes signed with the Mets, albeit as a starter.
Weaver was a revelation for the Yankees in 2024, tweaking his delivery to replicate more of Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s mechanics. The result was a 2.89 ERA in 62 appearances, and he ultimately took over the closer’s job from Holmes and was one of the Bombers’ most dominant relievers in their run to a World Series appearance. He appeared on a similar path to begin 2025 before injuring his hamstring, and once he returned, he pitched to an ERA north of 5.00. He was unable to rediscover his 2024 form in the playoffs, bombing out of the bullpen as concerns were raised that the 31-year-old could be tipping his pitches.
Weaver holds a 4.74 ERA across his 10-year career. He pitched for five teams in 2022 and 2023 before settling in with the Yanks.
The Mets needed bullpen help in the wake of closer Edwin Diaz signing with the Dodgers. Now, they will have Weaver and Williams likely taking the closer job.
This may not be the end of the Mets plucking members of the 2025 Yankees, as they reportedly have interest in Cody Bellinger.
