Pete Alonso, Clay Holmes selected to represent Mets, Yankees in 2024 MLB All-Star Game

It’ll be three for the Yankees and one for the Mets, as Bombers closer Clay Holmes and Amazins first baseman Pete Alonso have been named to the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.

Alonso, in his fourth appearance, and Holmes, in his second, were both MLB-made selections. Polar Bear will be the Mets’ lone All-Star, while Holmes joins fan-elected starters Aaron Judge and Juan Soto in the game.

Holmes, now 31, entered Sunday with 19 saves and a 3.00 ERA in 37 appearances, with 37 K against eight BB and a 1.307 WHIP in 36 innings.
His save total is third in the AL behind Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase and Baltimore’s Craig Kimbrel, but Kimbrel did not make the roster while Clase was a players’ choice.

Alonso, who has now been an All-Star three straight years, was slashing .243/.325/.467 with 18 homers, 48 RBI, and 21 doubles in 87 games this season. It’s only his fourth selection but marks the fifth consecutive time (not counting 2020) he has taken part in the festivities, as he of course won the 2021 Home Run Derby despite not making the NL All-Star team that year.

Francisco Lindor (.244/.310/.441, 15 HR, 43 RBI, 16 SB) was the Mets’ next most likely choice, it seems, but shortstop saw CJ Abrams selected as the Nationals’ lone rep behind starter Trea Turner and Mookie Betts.
