Jacob Trouba is gone, but Shesty is here to stay.
The New York Rangers announced late Friday afternoon that they have signed goaltender Igor Shesterkin to a record eight-year, $92 million contract extension that will kick in next season, with Shesterkin’s $11.5 million AAV a record for an NHL netminder.
The deal exceeds the record eight-year, $84 million deal Carey Price signed with Montreal that kicked in in 2018 – and hopefully for the Rangers, the soon-to-be 29-year-old Shesterkin’s pact works out better than Price, who has spent the last two-plus seasons on LTIR – and comes a few months after he rejected an eight-year, $88 million deal on the eve of the season.
Shesterkin is in the midst of a five-game losing streak, which has dropped him to 8-9-1 with a 3.09 GAA, but the netminder still holds a career 2.48 mark in that category to go with his 2021-22 Vezina Trophy and All-NHL accolades.
