As the Giants pivot from their Matthew Stafford pursuit, Sal Licata says Big Blue is in a situation where past mistakes and the current outlook of available quarterbacks are setting themselves up for another massive failure.
“It’s a recipe for disaster, especially after missing out on Matthew Stafford,” Sal said.
“It is clear their primary goal is to win games now. You can’t have both...win games now, and draft a guy for the future.”
Sal says Joe Schoen and company hurt themselves badly by not drafting a quarterback with the sixth overall pick last season, as they should have went after a Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix instead of taking Malik Nabers, even if Nabers has already looked like a future star. Now, the draft outlook for Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward isn’t glowing by any means, and the team’s top veteran option is off the board.
Sal believes the quarterback position should have been pursued with this level of urgency last offseason instead of believing that Daniel Jones could still be the solution, and now the team is getting burned for that mistake.
“Why now the fire under everybody’s rear end to go get a quarterback? Where was this a year ago?” Sal said. “This regime couldn’t see that Daniel Jones wasn’t it?”
Relying on Jones led to disaster last season, and to John Mara declaring that he better be in a better mood at the end of next season. Considering the options available, Sal has a hard time seeing how any new quarterback could turn things around for the Giants, which means Schoen and Brian Daboll are not in a position to succeed.
“They’re going to need to win, or else. And that is not a recipe for success, no matter who the quarterback is,” Sal said. “Their general manager and head coach pretty much have an edict to win now, or else. They’re screwed. That’s my point.”
