Fort Snelling was established in 1819 by the United States Army near St. Paul and Minneapolis at the sacred rivers known as Bdote. It played a crucial role in the early settlement of the area, before Minnesota was even an official state which happened in 1858.

Fort Snelling played a role in several military conflicts, including the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. During the Civil War, it served as a training ground and recruitment center for Union soldiers.

The fort is located on Dakota homeland, and its establishment had a significant impact on the Dakota people. The forced removal and relocation of indigenous peoples, including the Dakota, Ojibwe, and enslaved people, are part of the complex history associated with Fort Snelling.

Fort Snelling is now a historic site and museum, preserving the history of the region. It offers educational programs, exhibits, and events that allow visitors to learn about the diverse history of Minnesota.
