Born in 1937 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Brooks has become a legend in the hockey community around the world. In his playing career, he played for Johnson High School and the University of Minnesota. He played for the U.S. National Team eight times, including the 1964 and 1968 Olympic teams.
Brooks was the head coach of the 1980 Olympics team, famously known as the "Miracle on Ice" team. Brooks led the team to an unexpected and historic victory during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The team, made up of amateur and collegiate players, defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union team in a stunning upset. Their run in the Olympics and ultimate win is one of the most memorable moments in sports history.
