Sam Hunt made his long awaited return when he released Southside back in April 2020. The album was Hunt’s first since 2014 and for someone so adept at writing hit songs, he took a pretty measured approach at what songs ended up on the record.
“One of the things I really appreciate about our fans is that everybody's not coming to hear the one song that we all agree we like from the record,” he told Coop.
“There are groups that are drawn to certain songs that other groups aren’t as high on. If I stuck to one lane I feel like a large part of the fanbase would be disappointed in that so I try to cover a little more ground on the records than I maybe would be able to if I was just specifically trying to write to have success on radio.”
“There’s lots of different personalities out there, lots of different Country fans out there and lots of different tastes so I try to cover as much ground as I can,” Hunt added.
One of the byproducts of this is that it gives Hunt the opportunity to space out his hit songs on a record and have them flow in a manner that he’s happy with.
“The album puts the songs that are maybe the most successful in perspective. They give it a little context and make that song that may be everybody’s favorite, make a little more sense,” he said.
Before we wrapped, Coop had to deliver a few quick fire questions that put Hunt on the hot seat.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head? “Driver’s License”
Something comfy you wear at home that you never wear in public? Ugg house slippers.
What silly thing do you do that annoys your wife Hannah the most? Leaving things lying around everywhere.
Don’t miss Coop’s Rockin’ Saturday Night starting at 7 on your favorite RADIO.COM station.
