Cipha Sounds brings the laughs with 'a new band outta Long Island,' De La Soul

The new album, 'Cabin In The Sky,' arrives everywhere on November 21

Hip-Hop icons are in the building at the Hard Rock Hotel New York, as De La Soul joins us for an Audacy Check In, just days away from the release of their 10th studio album, Cabin In The Sky. But this is not just any interview, it is a hilarious look at "the Rap scene" that only Cipha Sounds could provide.

Part of Mass Appeal's Legend Has It series, Cabin in the Sky marks De La Soul’s first studio album in 9 years, and features contributions from DJ Premier, Super Dave, Pete Rock, Killer Mike, Common, Nas, Black Thought, and Yukimi from Little Dragon. It arrives everywhere on November 21.

Watch and listen as Pos and Maseo link up with Cipha Sounds inside Audacy Live, for a conversation only they could share. It's a side-splitting trip through time with some of the best in the game, and you don't want to miss it.

You know we couldn't let lyricists like this leave without getting real. Also inside Audacy Live at Hard Rock Hotel New York, De La Soul sat down with Mic Fox from rapfabulous for a more serious look at their career, the loss of Trugoy the Dove, and a deeper look at their latest project.

Discussing how their sound developed, the group notes that their use of obscure samples stemmed from necessity, and a desire to experiment beyond the standard Hip-Hop tools of the time. "We didn't realize we were experimenting, but we just weren't confined to the tools of what Rap was, even at that point," shares Pos. "That's just what we were on from the beginning."

"Obscurity was like the thing," adds Maseo. "It was innately the thing, and I think just being amongst each other, putting each other on to different things, that was the cool thing like when you were young. It was all about trying to have something new and different to share with your friends."

"I was using what I had. It wasn't like I had a whole bunch of records or I was hanging around like the DJs," admits Pos. "So me grabbing a jazz record out of my father's collection or this 50s or 60s record out of his collection, that's just what I had. And so that's what I felt like I brought to the table. And that wound up being something obscure within the Hip-Hop tools being used at that time."
