Maya Angelou was a poet, civil rights activist, and author from the United States. She is most known for her seven autobiographies, which detail her childhood and adolescent experiences. Sexually abused when she was eight years old, she did not allow her spirit be broken despite a rough childhood and youth.
Maya's first autobiography was published at the age of 41, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. She's also known for her feminist viewpoints, which she expresses in her famous poem "Phenomenal Woman."
