The 2022 Oscar nominations have been announced, and much to the surprise of Little Monsters everywhere, Lady Gaga’s name has been left out of the nominees for Best Actress, which has led to an uproar across Twitter and various conversations online.

Lady Gaga supporters were taken aback after learning that the actress did not garner a nomination for her performance as Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci. Many were excited to watch the multi-hyphenate star earn a second nomination in the prestigious category, following her 2019 nomination for portraying Ally in A Star is Born. In 2019, Gaga ultimately took home an Oscar for Best Original Song.
In 2022, the Oscar nominees for Best Actress are Jessica Chastain for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Olivia Colman for The Lost Daughter, Penélope Cruz for Parallel Mothers, Nicole Kidman for Being the Ricardos and Kristen Stewart for Spencer.
Prior to the nomination announcement, the buzz around Gaga’s second Best Actress Oscar nomination was unavoidable, particularly after the “Rain on Me” singer earned a spot in the best actress category at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and BAFTA Film Awards. LG was also dubbed best actress by the New York Film Critics Circle this year.
With each of these award ceremonies serving as essential precursors to the Oscars, it’s difficult to understand how Gaga snagged 4 nominations from each of these ceremonies but was left out of the biggest night in film celebrations.
Many believed that Kristen Stewart would not make the cut for the 2022 Oscar nominations after not being named at the SAG Awards or the BAFTA Film Awards.
In general, House of Gucci was left out of many of the top nomination categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film is up for just one nomination at the Oscars this year in the makeup and hairstyling category. Gaga’s hairstylist for House of Gucci, Frederic Aspiras, is the second Asian American to be nominated in the hair and makeup Oscars race.
The snub for Gaga comes after the superstar spent months promoting the film and taking part in a massive press tour, making appearances on every late-night talk show and beyond. Gaga’s media frenzy peaked when she scored the November cover of British and Italian Vogue. The artist constantly shared quotes that quickly became headlines and created buzz around her meticulous Method acting techniques. LG’s commitment to her role as Reggiani, both on and off the set, lead to having a psychiatric nurse on set to ensure she maintained stability.
