5 Extremely Weird Beers You Have to Try Now
Craft beers are getting weird. Gone are the days when a white IPA, a marriage of American and Belgian brewing styles that became popular about a decade ago, was considered pushing the envelope. For craft breweries today, releasing crazy flavors is as much a promotional tool to lure new customers to your more traditional brews as it is a way to distinguish yourself with experimental ingredients and methods.
And we're talking very experimental. The following weird beers are proof that you can put pretty much anything in your brew.
Unicorn Farts
This beer by Maryland-based DuClaw Brewery was inspired by "Unicorn Farts," a frosted delicacy served at the local Diablo Doughnuts that's topped with Fruity Pebbles and more frosting. DuClaw's offering isn't as literal -- rather than using the bakery's donuts, they brewed this sour drink with edible glitter (get it?) and fruity cereal.
Whale Testicle Beer
Yeah, you read that right. The Iceland-based Stedji Brewery combines two of its most coveted native resources for its Hvalur: Icelandic water and whale testicles smoked in sheep dung, to make this dark, smoky beer that will keep you warm and strong through the winter. And don't be too grossed out. The brewery only uses one massive testicle per batch of the brown brew.
Saturday Morning
Close your eyes and think back to the Saturday mornings of your childhood. You're living your best life, flipping through cartoons with a bowl of sugary cereal in your lap while your parents take advantage of their chance to sleep in. That's the nostalgia that the Virginia-based Smartmouth Brewery is trying to instill with their Saturday Morning beer, an IPA brewed with house-toasted marshmallows, cereal marshmallows, and hopped with Galaxy and Calypso.
Dunkin' Coffee Porter
Beer and donuts? We'd never thought of this before, but it's a match made in heaven. This beer was a collaboration between the donut giant and the brewing powerhouse Harpoon. On their site, Harpoon said this creation is their "tribute to all the days that Dunkin' helped us fire up the brew kettle." Finally, a drink for beer snobs and coffee snobs to describe with words like "robust," "roasty," "balanced," and "smooth."
Lobster Beer
The Saison Dell'Aragosta is a special beer made by Maine-based Oxbow that's brewed proudly with the state's favorite crustacean and sea salt. While the lobster taste doesn't dominate this blonde ale, which is made in collaboration with Birrificio del Ducato in Parma, Italy, another region that knows a thing or two about what to do with seafood.
