John Henry isn’t exactly the most public-facing owner, and as such there’s not a ton known about where he stands on his baseball team and the relationship he has with its top decision-maker.
Henry and Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom have become polarizing figures in the city. Henry’s proponents point to the overall success that the Red Sox have had under his ownership, saying that – at least partially – excuses the down years that have come between the peaks.
His detractors, though, look at his portfolio of businesses and point to an uber-rich owner who has his interest elsewhere. To many of those, Bloom is the figurehead tasked with running the Red Sox like a small market team.
Of course, the messaging Bloom has offered is that the Red Sox will win by way of young talent. When he took over, Boston's pipeline was in disarray, and the focus through much of his tenure has been rebuilding the farm system – something he’s held up his end of the bargain on.
However, knowing how copacetic things seem to be between Bloom and Henry would potentially offer insight into who is most responsible for the direction of the team. Bloom was asked Thursday on The Greg Hill Show about Henry’s take on the team at the moment, which allowed for some details of the relationship.
“Well, whether it’s talk or text or Whatsapp or whatever, we’re in constant communication,” Bloom said. “And (his mood is) exactly what you think it would be. Like all of us, especially the last couple of weeks – we won six in a row a week ago and things looked pretty good, then obviously the last week has been a struggle. It puts him in a bad mood, puts me in a bad mood, and you better believe everybody around the organization because we don’t like playing like this.”
