“It just felt like a really fun introduction for everything that's to come,” Dua said of why she chose “Houdini” as the lead single. “It was just a fun, dance song with a lot of the psychedelic influences that ought to be expected for the rest of the record and it just felt right, it felt good.”

While not a complete departure sonically from what she’s done in the past, Dua says she did play with some new sounds for the forthcoming project  to give it a fresh feel, while still showcasing the upbeat, dance sounds her fans idolize.

“I think the one through line is my voice,” she tells Audacy's Julia of finding balance between new sounds and her beloved tracks. “[My voice] keeps things very similar, and then I can experiment with lots of different sounds.”

The project is a product of new found confidence for the 28-year-old who says she’s more comfortable in her craft than ever before. “The more time I’ve spent writing music and spending time in the studio and talking about my experiences, the more comfortable I’ve gotten in speaking about those things and becoming more vulnerable and understanding my craft in a different way,” she shared. “I honestly think that where I’m at now, and how I feel in the studio now is way better than how I felt when I was first writing my first album… I love the feeling of being so certain and secure.”

While a release date has not been shared for the forthcoming album, Dua has promised it’ll arrive in 2024.
