DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) - The son of long-time Rangers pitcher Bobby Witt has been drafted number two overall, one better than his dad who was taken third overall by the Rangers in the 1985 draft.
Bobby Witt Jr. just completed his high school career at Colleyville Heritage High School.
It is believed the Witts are the highest-drafted father-son pair ever in MLB.
Witt Senior pitched for the Rangers from 1986 to 1992 when he was traded to Oakland.
He ended up playing another stint for the Rangers from 1995 to 1998.
Unlike his dad, Witt Junior is a shortstop and is considered a five-tool player.
Last night, he was drafted by the Royals who apparently agreed with the many scouts who rate him as having "...elite hands, quick feet and a plus arm."
He also hits for average and power.
In his just-completed senior season, Witt hit .489 and slugged 15 homers.
He's expected to begin his pro career in a few weeks with Kansas City affiliates in either Rookie League Idaho Falls or Low-A Lexington.
