DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - After wrapping up an extension with star running back Ezekiel Elliott and right tackle La'el Collins earlier this week, the Dallas Cowboys are holding out hope that they can reach a deal with another one of their players before their season opener Sunday against the New York Giants.
Cowboys COO Stephen Jones was asked Friday on the GBAG Nation if he is still having conversations with the agents for quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper.
"In general, I would say yes on Dak. I would say very limited on Amari for a range of reasons that will eventually get worked out, and we can proceed with him as well," Jones said. "I'd say the dialogue has been good and we're still holding out hope we can figure out how to come up with a deal by the game on Sunday."
Jones was then asked there is a proverbial clock on Sunday, and if a deal isn't done by then will they shut down negotiations until the offseason?
"No, we're open for business. I know sometimes the players don't care to do that. But we can obviously juggle that and do that ... would be fine with doing that. It's really up to the player and their representatives to determine what their deadlines are."
In an appearance with Radio.com's Home and Home, The Fan's Mike Fisher said the contract is "one phone call away" from getting done.
Things got even more interesting Tuesday when the Los Angeles Rams and Jared Goff agreed to a four-year deal worth $134 million, and a record $110 million guaranteed. The contract, valued at $33.5 million annually, bested Carson Wentz's four-year, $128 million deal, with $107 million guaranteed.
When asking Fish his thoughts on where he sees things with Dak Prescott's contract, Fish said, "I think that Dak all along has thought that $30 million is the threshold of honor for the quarterback. Did he ever ask for 40? I don't know.
"I wonder if he didn't ask for 36, and now look at the middle point of the 30-36, and look at how it mirrors where Jared Goff's (contract) is. I think we're going to discover that they can get close and in the range. I think all parties would like to do that sooner rather than later. I wouldn't be surprised if right around the corner we see a Dak deal, or a Byron Jones deal, or a Maliek Collins deal, and obviously, eventually, there's going to be an Amari Cooper deal, too."
