Dak Prescott Won't Commit To Showing Up, If Franchise Tagged

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott still haven't come to an agreement on a contract extension and the star quarterback is "a little disappointed" about it.

Prescott's rookie deal is officially up and the Cowboys are now up against the clock to either agree to a contract extension with their franchise quarterback or place the franchise tag on him on Mar. 10.

Would Prescott show up to team activities if the Cowboys did place the tag on him? According to the Dallas Morning News, the 26-year-old declined to commit to it.

"We'll get to that when we get to that," Prescott said during an appearance in Miami. "I look forward to talking to my agents and when that [tag] comes to play, the direction that we'll go. Until that's a reality, I won't worry about it."

Prescott was then asked if he was planning on spending a lot of time in Frisco in the coming months, and he said he wasn't.

"Report that," Prescott added. "Be sure to report that."

Should the Joneses and Prescott proceed down that road it could end the Cowboys 2020 season before it even starts. Prescott isn't required to show up for the team's offseason program, mandatory minicamp, training camp or preseason games while still collecting all of his money. That would surely spell trouble for Dallas coming out of the gate as the offense wouldn't have had time to prepare with their starting quarterback.

The Cowboys have two franchise tag options at their disposal and three players who could be worthy of them this offseason, including Amari Cooper, Bryon Jones and Prescott. They can apply the non-exclusive tag of about $26 million on Prescott, but they run the risk of having another team signing him to a bigger contract. They would, however, not be left empty-handed as they'd receive two first-round picks from the team that signs him.

They could also opt for the more likely scenario and place the exclusive franchise tag on him. That will cost them $33.4 million, which is in the ballpark of the yearly salary he reportedly desires.
