DALLAS (105.3 The Fan/AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have signed former Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith to help fill holes at linebacker, according to Mike Fisher.
Dallas suddenly had a need at the position when Luke Gifford (broken arm) and Joe Thomas (knee) were injured in Sunday's win over the Rams. The Cowboys are already without Leighton Vander Esch (neck), and veteran linebacker Sean Lee missed the entire week of practice before suiting up Sunday with pectoral and thigh injuries.
Smith played 12 games for San Francisco last season and two games for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019 before being released on Nov 5.
He's best known for his MVP performance in the 2014 Super Bowl, when he had 10 tackles and returned an interception 69 yards for a touchdown in Seattle's 43-8 win over Denver.
The connection between Smith and the Cowboys is an obvious one as the 30-year old was a member of the Seahawks under Cowboys secondary coach, Kris Richard.
Dallas also worked out Ray-Ray Armstrong, who played five games with the New Orleans Saints this season.
