The Stars tweeted out a video of a phone conversation where CEO Jim Lites informed Zubov of their intentions to put his jersey in the American Airlines Center rafters.
"That's great news. I really appreciate that. I'm touched and it's been an honor to play for this franchise for such a long time," Zubov said in the video.
Zubov was a member of the Stars organization for 12 of the 16 seasons he played in the NHL. He was a three-time all-star, and leads the franchise in every major category among defensemen. Zubov is most known, however, for helping the Stars win the Stanley Cup in 1999.
He'll join Neal Broten (No. 7), Bill Goldsworthy (No. 8), Mike Modano (No. 9), Bill Masterton (No. 19) and Jere Lehtinen (No. 26) as the only players to ever have the sweater's retired.
Back in June, it was announced that Zubov and former Star Guy Carbonneau had been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is set for Nov. 18.
