FRISCO (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Cowboys believe their defense is increasingly star-studded. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is a two-time Pro Bowler for the defense. Middle linebacker Jaylon Smith, in the team's opinion, was deserving of the same honor last year.
And going into 2019? Lawrence believes the Dallas defense needs "defense'' of a different sort.
In a goofy exchange in the Dallas locker room on Thursday after the team's final offseason session before they reconvene for training camp in Oxnard, California, in late July, Tank Lawrence grabbed a microphone to serve as the interviewer of Jaylon, a recent graduate of Notre Dame.
Lawrence quizzed Smith about his plans to put the degree to practical use, asking if Jaylon "wants to become a lawyer.''
Jaylon: 'Naw, I'm a businessman.'
Tank: 'Well, after all these damn dead bodies gonna be on the floor this year, we're gonna need a lawyer!'
Jaylon went on to chuckle and suggest the Dallas defense might do such damage in the "bodies'' department that it may "need two'' lawyers. And Tank suggested that if Jaylon isn't going to serve as an attorney, Lawrence himself may have to handle it.
Obviously, though, first, D-Law needs to get back on the field. He had offseason shoulder surgery after agreeing to the richest contract in Cowboys history. But he vows to be ready for the Week 1 NFL regular-season opener against the Giants.
Jaylon Smith is of course one of the NFL's grandest success stories, becoming a standout after that devastating knee injury sustained at Notre Dame. There will at some point, Cowboys Nation hopes, the need for someone to make the case for Jaylon to join Tank as a Pro Bowlers.
If the bodies stack up? Surely the Pro Bowl votes will, too.
